How to Treat Adult Acne
How to Treat Adult Acne
Adult acne is one of the most common, and most frustrating, skin concerns I see in my practice. There’s a myth that acne is something you “outgrow” after your teenage years, but in reality, many adults, especially women, continue to experience breakouts well into their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond.
The good news? Adult acne is treatable! With the right combination of at-home skincare, prescription options, and in-office treatments, you can achieve clearer and healthier skin.
Why Adult Acne Happens:
Before we dive into solutions, it helps to understand why adult acne occurs in the first place. Unlike teenage acne, which is often driven primarily by excess oil production during puberty, adult acne tends to be more complex.
Common triggers include:
- Hormonal fluctuations (especially around menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause)
- Stress
- Genetics
- Pore-clogging skincare or makeup products
- Inflammation within the skin
Adult acne also tends to show up differently. Instead of widespread breakouts across the forehead and cheeks, many adults experience deeper, more cystic breakouts along the jawline, chin, and lower face.
Morning Skincare Routine for Adult Acne
When it comes to managing acne, consistency is everything. A simple, targeted morning routine can make a significant difference in controlling oil, preventing clogged pores, and protecting your skin.
1. Start With the Right Cleanser. Your cleanser sets the tone for your entire routine.
Look for ingredients like:
- Salicylic acid – penetrates into pores to dissolve oil and debris
- Glycolic acid – gently exfoliates the surface of the skin and improves texture
These ingredients help keep pores clear and reduce the likelihood of breakouts. If your skin is on the sensitive side, you can alternate with a gentle, non-medicated cleanser to avoid irritation.
2. Apply a Vitamin C Serum. Vitamin C is one of the most powerful multitasking ingredients in skincare.
Vitamin C helps:
- Brighten dull skin
- Fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (those dark marks left after breakouts)
- Protect against environmental damage
One of my go-to recommendations for acne-prone patients is SkinBetter Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum. It delivers antioxidant protection while still being gentle enough for sensitive, breakout-prone skin.
3. Don’t Skip Moisturizer. A common mistake I see? Skipping moisturizer because you’re worried about making acne worse.
In reality, hydration is essential. When your skin is stripped and dry, it can actually produce more oil, leading to more breakouts.
Choose a moisturizer that is:
- Lightweight
- Oil-free
- Non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores)
This helps maintain a healthy skin barrier and keeps your routine balanced.
4. Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable. If you take away one thing from this post, let it be this: always wear sunscreen!
This is especially important if you’re using exfoliating acids or retinoids, which make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
For acne-prone skin, I typically recommend mineral-based sunscreens with:
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
These ingredients are less likely to clog pores, are naturally anti-inflammatory, and tend to be better tolerated by sensitive skin types.
Evening Routine for Adult Acne:
Nighttime is when we shift from prevention to correction. This is when your skin goes into repair mode, making it the ideal time to use targeted treatments.
1. Cleanse Again
Use the same cleanser from your morning routine to remove makeup, oil, and debris from the day.
2. Incorporate a Retinoid
Retinoids are one of the most effective treatments for acne — both over-the-counter and prescription versions.
They work by:
- Increasing cell turnover
- Preventing clogged pores
- Reducing inflammation
- Improving overall skin texture
If you’re new to retinoids, start slowly (2–3 nights per week) and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance.
3. Consider Prescription Options
For many adults, especially women dealing with hormonal acne, topical treatments alone may not be enough.
One commonly prescribed option is Spironolactone. This oral medication helps regulate hormonal influences that contribute to acne, particularly along the jawline and chin.
A board-certified dermatologist can determine whether this or other prescription treatments are appropriate for you.
In-Office Treatments That Accelerate Results:
Once you’ve established a consistent at-home routine, in-office treatments can take your results to the next level. These are especially helpful for stubborn acne, lingering discoloration, and scarring.
Chemical Peels for Active Acne:
Chemical peels are one of my favorite treatments for patients with ongoing breakouts.
Salicylic acid-based peels, in particular:
- Penetrate deep into the pores
- Dissolve excess oil
- Reduce inflammation
- Help prevent future breakouts
They’re quick, require minimal downtime, and are most effective when done as a series. Over time, you’ll notice clearer, smoother, and brighter skin.
Microneedling for Acne Scarring:
Once active acne is under control, many patients are left with textural scarring, small indentations, or uneven areas in the skin. Microneedling is an excellent option for this.
It works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which:
- Stimulate collagen and elastin production
- Remodel the skin from within
- Gradually smooth out scars
Microneedling is safe for most skin types and involves significantly less downtime than more aggressive resurfacing treatments. Most patients begin to see visible improvement after just a few sessions, with continued enhancement over several months as collagen production increases.
Treating adult acne isn’t about a single product or quick fix. It’s about a comprehensive, consistent approach.
The most effective plans typically include:
- A simple, targeted daily skincare routine
- Prescription treatments when needed
- Strategic in-office procedures to enhance results
Whether you’re dealing with active breakouts, stubborn dark spots, or lingering scars, the right combination of treatments can truly transform your skin!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, you’re not alone. Acne can be frustrating, especially when what worked in your teenage years no longer seems effective.
