WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?

Skin Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment in Knoxville, TN

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but when detected early, it is also one of the most treatable. At Refine Dermatology in Knoxville, Tennessee, we provide expert skin cancer screening, diagnosis, and personalized treatment plans designed to protect both your health and your quality of life.

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Salyards takes a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to skin cancer care—helping patients feel informed, supported, and confident at every stage of treatment.

Why Skin Cancer Screening Is So Important

Your skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation daily. Over time, this cumulative exposure can damage skin cells and lead to abnormal growths. Regular skin exams allow us to detect suspicious lesions early, often before they become more serious or invasive.

We recommend professional skin checks for patients of all ages, especially those with:

● A history of sun exposure or sunburns

● Fair skin, light eyes, or blonde or red hair

● A personal or family history of skin cancer

● A high number of moles or changing lesions

Types of Skin Cancer We Diagnose and Treat

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. It often appears as a pearly or shiny bump, a pink patch that slowly enlarges, or a sore that doesn’t heal. While basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads to other parts of the body, it can continue to grow locally and cause tissue damage if left untreated.

Treatment options depend on the size, depth, and location of the lesion and may include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, ED&C (electrodesiccation and curettage), or topical medications for select superficial cases.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer and tends to be more aggressive than basal cell carcinoma. It may appear as scaly patches, rough or crusted bumps, or tender areas that bleed easily. SCC carries a higher risk of spreading, particularly when lesions are large, rapidly growing, or located on the lips, ears, or scalp.

Treatment often involves surgical excision or Mohs surgery for higher-risk tumors. In certain cases, topical therapies, radiation, or coordination with oncology specialists may be necessary.

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and can spread quickly if not detected early. It often presents as a new or changing mole, especially one that is asymmetrical, has irregular borders, multiple colors, or is growing.

Early-stage melanomas are typically treated with surgical excision. Depending on the depth of the melanoma, additional evaluation such as a sentinel lymph node biopsy may be recommended. More advanced cases may require immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or radiation as part of a coordinated care plan.

Actinic Keratoses (Precancerous Lesions)

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly spots caused by long-term sun damage. While they are not cancer, they are considered precancerous and can progress to squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated.

Treatment options include cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen), topical medications such as fluorouracil, or photodynamic therapy (PDT). Treating actinic keratoses early is an important step in skin cancer prevention.

Skin Cancer FAQs

What are the early signs of skin cancer?

Early signs include new or changing moles, non-healing sores, scaly or crusted patches, and spots that bleed, itch, or grow over time.

How often should I have a skin cancer screening?

Most patients benefit from a full-body skin exam once a year. Patients with a history of skin cancer or higher risk factors may need more frequent visits.

Is skin cancer treatment painful?

Most treatments are performed using local anesthesia to keep patients comfortable. Recovery time and discomfort vary depending on the procedure.

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery is a specialized technique that removes skin cancer layer by layer while examining each layer under a microscope. It offers the highest cure rate and preserves as much healthy tissue as possible.

Can skin cancer come back after treatment?

While many skin cancers are cured with treatment, having one skin cancer increases the risk of developing another. Ongoing monitoring and sun protection are essential.
